Controlling real fuel cost: what fleet data actually reveals
Fuel is the largest controllable line in a fleet budget — and the easiest to lose. Litre-level registration exposes the gap between what was bought and what was burned.
Fuel cards give you a monthly total. They do not tell you which truck consumed above its own historical average, which route quietly became more expensive, or which fill-up never matched a trip.
Measure per unit, not per invoice
- Litres per 100 km per truck, compared with that truck's own baseline rather than a fleet average.
- Cost per trip and per tonne-kilometre, so pricing decisions rest on actual consumption.
- Maintenance events linked to the same asset record — a rising fuel curve is often a mechanical warning.
Once every litre is registered against a truck, a driver and a trip, anomalies stop being anecdotes. Supervisors get an exception list instead of a spreadsheet, and the conversation moves from suspicion to evidence.
You cannot negotiate a fuel budget you cannot reconstruct line by line.
